Regardless of discipline, all Phi Beta Kappa members represent superior achievement and a commitment to the spirit of learning. Phi Beta Kappa continues to honor those who achieve excellence in a broad-based exploration of the arts and sciences during their undergraduate years. In 1776, five students at the College of William & Mary founded Phi Beta Kappa as a society devoted to the pursuit of liberal education and intellectual fellowship. These awards and prizes have been made possible through the generous donations and contributions of friends and alumni of the College. To recognize the outstanding academic achievements of its students, the College and its departments award numerous awards and prizes to a select number of students who have demonstrated excellence in their field of study. Many departments and programs offer talented and highly motivated juniors and seniors the opportunity to take individual honors courses or to enroll in special honors programs that often culminate in the writing of a thesis under faculty supervision.
Deadline to apply and submit application materials: Friday, April 23 (11:59PM) Uploading the following: personal statement and current transcript.Īpplications open Tuesday, March 9.Students interested in joining the Program in the spring term prior to their sophomore year apply by: Scholars study away at one of the sites in the NYU Global Network.Scholars have the opportunity to participate in the Scholars Lecture Series, cultural activities, community service, and service–learning projects.This includes taking special courses, undertaking a research project, and writing a thesis prior to graduation. Scholars complete the Honors track in their major.Grant recipients present their research findings at the CAS Undergraduate Research Conference, and have their abstracts published in Inquiry, the College’s annual journal for undergraduate research. Scholars apply for a grant from the Dean’s Undergraduate Research Fund (DURF).Advanced Honors Seminars are also available in the second and third years. Scholars participate in a Scholar Seminar in the first and second years that provides guidance and faculty mentoring focused on developing and building the skills needed for research at the honors level.Students participating in the Presidential Honors Scholars Program have the opportunity to enrich their academic and cultural experience in the College. Students may also apply for entry after they have matriculated, having demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and a commitment to leadership and service. The top ten percent of the entering first-year class is invited to join the Presidential Honors Scholars Program. Presidential Honors Scholars, Advanced Honors Seminars, and Departmental Honors programs are some of these opportunities (First-Year Seminars are now required of all incoming CAS students these courses remain rigorous and devoted to academic inquiry at a sophisticated level). The College provides many opportunities to students wishing to challenge themselves intellectually.
